I do tire of explaining how a modern suv, even if 4 wheel drive, on wide sports tires will be useless on snow to those who buy their Chelsea tractors..!

“But it’s 4 wheel drive!?!?!”

Yeah so you have 4 wheels unable to get any traction!!

My mrs’ VW polo with its narrower tyres and shorter wheelbase would be better on snow than my 4 wheel drive suv (both on summer tyres). She does not get that at all!!

Fortunately where I live we are lucky to get 1 day of snow every few years so I don’t bother.!!

Go to the alps and most people don’t bother with 4x4 for this reason unless driving off road. 2wd with winter tyres and snow chains will get you through 99% of it.

Sadly winter tyre education over here is non-existent. I didnt come across them till I was 30 when I moved up to Yorkshire.

I used to love it when I heard "Ah its a BMW that'll suck in the snow" after we moved up, only to be smug as I scooted past everyone in my rubbish rear wheel drived BMW.

Anyway another myth is that winter tyres are only for snow. They make a huge difference in cold wet conditions.

Agree with all of this. Years back I used to fit winter tyres to my V8 coupe and easily went past X5s and the like on stock tyres in the snow.

When my Disco4 was in for a service they gave me an F Pace on summer tyres and it snowed. Most dangerous driving experience I have had in a long time. I always put winter tyres on my daily driver and even if it does not snow, the advantages are huge.

Based on a month or so of testing, the Hankook Kinergy 4S is a cheaper alternative to the X Climate. Very impressed on the XC70

I just though given the standard fit on xc70’s was the scorpion that Volvo would have equipped v90cc’s with a more appropriate tyre to the car. I’m not changing tyres now, but come sept/Oct I’ll be buying scorpions again

Agreed. I was confused on my last car v60 CC that it came with sports tyres. But then you remember that, let’s be honest here, they are only really designed to LOOK to be off road capable.

That’s not to say it couldn’t deal with muddy tracks etc to a surprisingly capable standard considering.

After many complaints about road noise Volvo probably put quieter sports tyres on instead of a more appropriate tyre.

Well, when it comes to changing the tyres in the Summer I would love to fit all-season tyres but unfortunately, no-one makes one in 21" which is what Volvo fitted to our car(someone must but I can't find them). Stupid wheels! Look lovely but are so impractical. I even asked the dealer before we bought it whether he had an old set of 19s or 20s that he could swap them for.

Had to drive 40 miles for a 9am pre-op this morning (prep for my knee op) - car felt utterly secure in the -5 temperatures, snow, slush etc. Winter tyres make these kind of conditions utterly stress free - currently using Alpin 5 on 19" rims. Much prefer the way the car drives on this combo, much quieter and softer with more tyrewall but a bit more bouncy than on the 21" Verde summers - just looks a bit naff. And do I care it looks naff....
