Default XC90 Coolant Loss

Hi All,

First post to the forum. I look after the maintenance side of things for my parents 2016 XC90 D5 Inscription.

We have noticed a slow and not insignificant coolant loss. Have probably topped the coolant up at least 4-5 times within the last 6 months. It's been to the main dealers twice now and they have pressure tested it both times. Nothing seems to be cropping up as a major issue according to them.

Has anyone else had anything similar ? Anything I should look out for ?

Car has 44k on the clock and runs perfectly well engine wise without any obvious white smoke etc. I have been told the powerpulse hose has a slight split in it but also been told that this is not likely to be the problem if there is one.

Many thanks in advance.

Check the radiator, they sometimes leak when cold between the core and one of the header tanks.

I had a similar issue on a 2015 XC60 D4 (same engine block) - sporadic coolant loss, no obvious leaks and no white smoke or residue on the oil filler cap. In my case it was a problem with the head gasket and cylinder head.

This kind of problem is rare with the VEA diesel engine but not unheard of.

There is also a known issue with the radiator leaking, so it could be that too.

Many thanks for your advice - will have a look as soon as I can.

Out of interest what sort of price did it cost you for the head gasket ?

Cheers

Mine was covered by an extended warranty and included a new cylinder head as well as the head gasket, so was around £2500 at a dealer.
