Default Electronic Parking Brake failure & resolution

Just had the dreaded 'parking brake service required' message on the display of my '09 XC70.

Unfortunately the Electronic Parking Brake failed in the on position, so I couldn't move the car, and sods law the XC was on the end of my drive blocking every other car.

In the end I had to get underneath, and spend a couple of hours swearing whilst trying to unbolt the EPB motors. Not an easy task at ground level!

I'd changed the rear discs and pads last year, so lucky I knew how they were attached.

There really should be some kind of manual release. If it had have happened away from home, it would have needed some kind of recovery.

Anyway, thanks to this forum, I quickly worked out that the Park Brake Module was probably at fault. So after a new PBM and the relevant coding (£250+vat) I have a working EPB.
