2009 V70 Steering Lock - Service Required
Hey guys,
Had the above error today on my 2009 V70 2.0D SE. Never seen it before, although interestingly I had the ECU remapped the day previously (wanted more power) and all of a sudden this error pops up. Coincidence, or related? Any idea on the underlying issue and cost to fix? |

Its not often i believe in coincidence, and this is too close to the remap, need to speak to them, poss used a generic map for another year?

I've no idea on the error message or cause, though agree it seems a bit more than a coincidence following some electronic work for the remap.
Where did you have it remapped out of interest as it looks like you're in the same area as me?

It just seems odd, and having done some googling on the matter apparently the steering lock can engage while driving (!) with this fault, so I'm now hesitant to drive the car. |

The concept of the steering lock operating while the car is moving is horrific. Once you interfere with any of the ECU functions without knowing what the possible, even if unlikely, repercussions might be, you are risking real danger. I've never heard of this problem with other cars where chip tuning is common but Volvo do deliberately make it difficult for owners to have their ECU mapping altered other than through the Polestar route. If this fault is really due to "unauthorised chipping" I can see another reason to pay the extra and have the Polestar upgrade. I'm beginning to feel less aggrieved about the cost I paid for my Polestar upgrade and a little bit safer if such a horrific condition can be triggered by non Volvo interference with the ECU.

Also check that your battery is properly charged . This can throw up messages if its low . Re calibrating the ECU may have needed the ignition to have been left on for a while . Do get it checked though or you may be left stranded . I dont know if you could lose steering while driving but better safe than sorry?

Yeah, Volvo apparently design the ECU so that they're only supposed to be read from, not written to - you can do it, but it's not as simple as plugging the car in via the OBD2 port and flashing a new map like it is on a lot of cars. The ECU needs pulling out of the car and all sorts. Annoyingly, Polestar don't offer a map for my car as it's the PSA/Ford 2.0 unit found in the 307/Mondeo etc - it's not a Volvo unit. I'd have gone Polestar if it was an option though but sadly it's not something I can do. Quote:
I plugged in my ODB2 adapter and read the codes from the ECU, then cleared them and it seems to lock again properly, whereas previously it wouldn't lock at all, so hopefully it was a one off. If it comes back I'll have to get it booked in... can't imagine it's a cheap job either. |

Sounds like it's a good job I've got breakdown cover then I will get it booked in - there's a Volvo specialist about 15 miles from me so I'll take it to them. Closer than the dealer and no doubt much cheaper too! |
