Another valve
I have a 245 GL 1989 bought new. Converted to LPG 125k
The first engine (B200E) lasted 496k miles. One valve replaced 350k miles I put in a second hand engine ( B230E). Did'nt know its history, but just to give my Volvo man time to rebuild a other B230 engine as I could not find anybody to bore out the 200 to 230! The B230 engine blew a valve at 20k after fitting. Head refurbed. I was asked if I wanted new insterts, I said no as all heads were hard. Mistake, I have compression down on two cylinders only after about 10k. Time to get it sorted again and get FLASH TUBE.....Ordered! BrianH 622K |

I dont think we have had a valve go ever on any of the LPG engines but have only done around 200,000 of LPg running on any one engine (taking the total of teh highest millage engine to the 400,000 mark)
We did buy a GLT on petrol that had burnt a valve and had teh head repled on go on to do the same thing not long after! For info you can not bore the B200 to 2.3 Not sure if flashlube is going to help as burnt valves are caused by lean burning rather than lack of lubrication |

Classicswede how interesting. Thanks for the response. There's more on my blog titled 'Big Bang.
I knew about lean running but when I had my MOT in October it did'nt get through the emissions. CO 5.460%, so I turned down the mixture screw half a turn and it passed 2.592%. My IWEMA Dutch LPG book gives 05% to 1.0% at 3000rpm? Something is not right! It must be the difference between idle and 3000RPM It seemed to run better too, and when I took out the plugs 6 months later, they were a nice brown gray colour. So I thought OK! The evaporiser is a Dutch GOOT single stage, But I have a OMVL tandem; I am planning to put in. This will improve control over a large RPM range. I hope, and may get over my problems. I see there is a cast 200 and 230 mark on the side of the blocks. I take it that there is less cast iron in the 200 and wont bore out to 2300 (2316cc). I still have the 200 head in good condition and will put on the 230. Any problems there, they look identical both have V cams. BrianH 622k...... planning 1m |

If you have one of the old type OMVL R90's they are great but the new ones do not work as well. The old Groot (GMS) units were not bad.
The castings are not the same and there is not enough material there to bore to 2.3, it will break into teh water ways. The head you can swap over no issues there You could fit a lamda into the exhaust and use an LED display to give you an idea of what is going on. |

Thanks Classicswede..............
A Lamba in the exhaust to measure/adjust mixture. Food for thought. I will look this up. BrianH |

If it has a spring on the idle adjuster it's a good one

Not another valve
Luckily it was slight recesstion on the No 1 and less on No 2 exaust valve seats
These were shimmed out and now the 245 runs very smoothly again. Thanks Classicsweede for your input. I can see now the major problem was a week mix. Its now retuned and made richer. But I will keep an eye on this with my gas analyser up to 3000rpm The OMVL R90/E has two 6mm ajacent ajusters. No springs! BrianH |

You could install something like this to see what the mixture is doing. The lambda signal wire is easy to get to on the bulkhead
