Default Sensus in MY11.5 XC60 vs MY18 XC60

Picked up my XC60 Inscription Pro yesterday, to replace the 8 year-old MY11.5 SE Lux Nav I'd had from new (one of the first Sensus-equipped cars in the UK). Brilliant car and better in nearly every way compared to the outgoing model.

I say nearly, because what were Volvo thinking when they thought the USB media player was fit for purpose!?!

I'd read the various threads on here regarding its issues, some going way back to early versions on the XC90, and thought surely they'd have fixed it by now. Nope; still completely useless for anything other than playing on Shuffle, and even then only after re-arranging the folder structure and filename length to fit within its limitations. Then there's the compilation album issue... The old Sensus had no trouble with the same 128GB USB memory stick. I just hope there's an update in the pipeline.

Ok, rant over! Other than that, it's a fantastic car. A real step up from my old XC60. I'd post some pictures, but it's a bit wet out there just now!

Steve

I very much doubt it. USB media playback is just as bad now as it was 2 years ago. Not a single thing about it has changed despite complaints since the system first came out.

Why do people bother with USB media?

I just connect my phone up with BT and use play lists I have on my phone, also then I can use it to connect everything I want to listen music from.

Am I missing something using USB over BT

Spotify is the future.

The 29.5Gb of music on my iPhone, collected, and lovingly curated over many years, was rendered obsolete, the day I took delivery of my new XC60, and one of my many daughters said “oooh, you have Spotify”.

The only Artist from my youth I haven’t been able to find there, was Angletrax.

Don’t ask...

Personal preference. I like to have all my music available in the car, sorted by artist/album, and be able to browse the media easily. For example I might want to listen to all albums by a particular artist, in the correct order, or listen to all tracks on a compilation album, or just play the entire library in artist/album order. Old Sensus did all this without any fuss.

My collection weighs in at ~12,000 tracks across ~1000 albums and occupies well in excess of my phone's 64GB capacity. Playlists won't cut it (new Sensus has a limit of 100 playlists).

On a related note, I also noticed that Bluetooth audio glitches occasionally in the new car; periodically dropping out for a fraction of a second at random intervals. Again, old Sensus did not suffer from this.

I'm just surprised the media player is so poor when every other aspect of the car seems to be an improvement on the previous generation (though to be fair I've not yet driven it enough to be certain of that!).

You can do all of that with either a phone or iPod. If bluetooth is dropping then try to delete the phone and rejoin, no issues in my S90, I just use my iPhone and local playlists on it. If I want to listen to anything else it uses Apple Music to retrieve it over 4G through the car.

USB sticks are fine, but I doubt it will be a medium that will be around for much longer, certainly not in its current form with the introduction of USB-C.

I keep it simple, I listen to a DAB radio station that constantly plays classic music.
Not always "my" music of course, but it helps me to broaden my horizon

The main reason I like to use USB is that I have a lot of music encoded in (lossless) FLAC. The media player in Sensus will play this from USB at high quality but it would degrade the quality to listen to it from the phone over Bt (FLAC isn't supported over Bt so the audio would be re-compressed).

People listening to Spotify in Extreme quality might be better to use the Sensus app rather than stream it over Bt from the phone (again, Spotify uses a codec called Ogg Vorbis which isn't supported by Bt and the audio has to be re-compressed). This is particularly true for those with upgraded sound systems (HK or B&W). However, on the standard sound systems many people probably wouldn't notice any difference.

yeh, I had a feeling someone was going to post quality reason, is it really that much better while listening in a car, just seems a lot of hassle?

Are you taking music from CD's and converting to FLAC?
Be quite happy to try if it better.

Complete waste of time in a car, totally wrong listening environment, and high end audio in a car is a gimmick!

I am an audiophile, expensive kit in the house, but would never bother in the car, you cannot tell the difference as the whole experience is flawed with background noise and angles everywhere, not worth the hassle of trying to listen to ultra high quality music in a car, period.
