It was a K-reg 145, a De Luxe, think. It was the same car driven by Carolyn Seymour's character Abby Grant in the first few episodes of the original 1975 version of 'Survivors'. I presume that it was owned by either the BBC itself or someone who was involved in the production of both series:

Incidentally, the 2009 remake of the series featured in its first episode a G-reg 240GLT estate:

Hey here's a laugh! The other day I was checking 'back-links' on my web-site. I found I had one from a Simpson's forum LOL.
Could'nt work out how so had to have a look.
It turned out the thread on The Simpson's forum (yes you read that correctly), was a debate on what type of car Homer drives.
Well, one forum member suggested it was a Volvo 240...................... low & behold he did a search for Volvo 240 images & my 'Tank' popped up! So he posted a pic of it & it provides a link to one of my Volvo pagesLOL.
So a Volvo 240 in The Simpsons then? No I don't think so
LOL, well hope your all still awake, where's me glass...................... outta here!

Principal Skinner drove what looked to be a 700 or a 900 in some episodes. Homer's car looks like an amalgamation of various Chrysler products of the mid-1970s

I like the way that the car in the last screen shot (a pre-1986 240?) has its grille slash on back-to-front

that was a 145, I think.

edit* whoops, sorry , somebody already said that- that'll teach me to read the post after the one I was replying to.

Here's one nobody mentioned, The 1983 US nuclear holocaust film "The day after" featured Jason Robards' doctor character driving a 240 estate, at least until EMP from The Bomb fries the ignition circuitry. It's not a particularly pleasant film, but if you grew up through the early '80s you will relate to the nuclear paranoia- and its not as bad as the UK film "threads"
