Just do proper research next time and you might end up with something you actually like.

I got the tortoise after about 21k then warning lights followed. The performance returned to normal after 10-15mins of standing with engine off but the tortoise returned most days after 20-30mins of driving. All very frustrating and became quite unsafe at times as I never knew when I would loose power. Took the dealer about two weeks to get the new parts and they wouldn't offer a courtesy car in the meantime. All good since the EGR replacement but am fully expecting it to return in another year or so.

That is really not good enough from your dealer. When I had a DPF sensor on my old A4 go there was no change in performance or drivability but without asking my dealer gave me a courtesy car identical to my own for 10 days while they waited for the part (known issue so there was a back log). Touch wood I have had no EGR issues with my V60 yet, but I seem to be one of the luck few (approaching 30k miles!).

It does seem to be time related as much as mileage related - 12 months. Mine came on the day after its first service and I've noticed quite a few similar.

Totally agree, service has not been great at all. I've had BMW's and Audi's in the past and customer service has been top notch.

Having read this VEA thread and as much as I can find of relevance as a prelude to buying an XC60, I can't help thinking that one of the 5 cylinder Ford based engines might be better than the VEA engine as a private purchase for the long haul since the EGR fault doesn't appear to have been resolved.

I have been told by a Volvo service manager that to meet Euro 6 emissions the D4 AWD engine had changes made to the operation of its EGR at low temperatures, so I'm even tempted to go for a 'new' 2015 MY 5 cylinder version. Is that too paranoid, and why hasn't there been more nostalgia for the 5 cylinder engine on this thread particularly the D4?

Why nostalgia? The 5 pot is still in full production? Great engine though. Nothing I've heard sounds better. (Ford Based? It was designed by Volvo.)

And is by good in boats also

Did it start as the Penta Marine or was the car version first?

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I think the inline 5-cylinder layout was based on the Audi diesel that Volvo used in the 80s and 90s. Then Volvo did its own in-house all-aluminium 5-potter to replace the Audi lump, and the basics were shared between the car and boat division.
