before i bougt my V40, i was told not to buy one, as they had the build quality of a poor renault car. but this refered to the early models, or so the guy said.

I had a V40 2.0 CD auto as a company car back in 1998, I had it for 4 years and did 85000 miles. Apart from the occassional suspension link I had no problems and the bodywork was fine. So I was happy to buy myself a phase 2 S40D, it was registered Nov 2001, and I have checked all the areas mentioned so far in this thread and I haven't found any rust. Perhaps I have just been lucky. By the way I don't work for Volvo UK or a dealer.

I've found rust coming out of the inside seams of the boot and bonnet, where the outer skin is welded to the inner one. My car is a 1996 2.0 CD

I have a 2001 S40 and for quite some time, there has been a rust build-up at the very bottom of the hood (near the opening of the hood), both on the outside and the inside. Volvo Canada will not cover this under my 8-year warranty because there is no perforation, but it looks absolutely awful. The rust is flaking off!

Has anyone encountered this problem? I would be very interested to know if I am not alone considering that Volvo always tries to hide behind the excuse that the hood was repainted (when I bought the car used) -- but I know that the area in question (especially under the hood) was never repainted!

Hmmm.... My 940 bonnet front edge looks like I drive in a gravel pit..
If not covered (cracks/gaps in the paint) then depending on how bad the rust is either clean off and have it resprayed - but get it acid etched with a zinc-ing chemical or galvanised - and then painted up..

By the way, please try to resist the temptation to use huge fonts. We're not blind you know..

I think Volvo use rust as a form of punishment for people who want small cars - the smaller Volvos of every generation have always rusted worse than the larger ones. In terms of modern cars with all the water traps designed out, I'd not expect any rust at all up to 10 years. Significant rust before 15 isn't good. I wouldn't expect a structural MOT failure before 20. Then again I'm a 300 series guy...so I guess I can throw that guide out

In terms of the corrosion warranty get-out clauses...that's just ridiculous. Rust is rust, whether it's caused by paint failure ('cosmetic' rust), or failure of the rustproofing in a seam - the classic cause of 'structural' rust.

I can't find a spot of rust on our 99 V40. I've found it to be very well screwed together in general, albeit of a rather more lightweight construction than the later Volvos of the day - very much like the 300 series.

I've got some surface rust on the front edge of both rear wheel arches on my '99 V40. Apart from that all seems well on the bodywork front.

No rust at all on my X reg S40 and touch wood it stays like that. Mine has s/h up to 70K and its been in my hands since it had 90K on the clock. Maybe its the colour - desert wind! Doesn't show the rust!

Got a few bumper scrapes on it tho' (not by me I might add).

WEll my 97 S40 has evidently spent so long outside in the elements that instead of being red its totally pink, to the point that the front wings are starting to show white, however it hasn't rusted at all. I've also found it to be fairly well screwed together - I was initially wary about buying an early model.

I think I must be fairly lucky with rust theses days as I have an 18 year old 480 that is only just starting to show the first signs on the doors, and none on the arches.

I remember working on a couple of my mates cars, renaults and peugeots and the like, and being absolutely astounded by the general lack of underseal on them - one renault 19 has stuff that was paper thin and flaking off, and a peugeot that had none at all, just the painted/rusted finish!
