Default 2001, fan cuts out almost every time I drive...

Hi,

Hope someone can shed some light on my problem. Cabin fan cuts out almost every time I drive. Sometimes only a few seconds after switching on the fan blower, other times it runs fine for over 60 minutes. Makes no difference what temperature it's set to - AC or high heat. Mechanic looked and said he thinks it's the blower motor, so I got a second hand from Traynors and replaced old one. Made no difference. Thought maybe it's the resistor... so I purchased and installed a second hand OEM blower motor speed resistor. Made no difference...

What else could it be that makes the fan randomly cut out? Is there another sensor I should be looking at? Appreciate any help. Desperate to get it sorted before winter kicks in. Need the heater to work!!

thanks,
Jak

Hi Jak

Does the car have climate control? If so, I'd be hedging my bets on the climate control module since you've tried everything else. And I'm pretty sure that post 2001 cars even without climate control also have a control module for the fan and heater/distribution servos.

A lot will depend on if you have climate control or standard heating, climate there are quite a few more issues areas that could cause an issue, standard heating not so much.

Default Standard Heating System or Elec Climate Control system

Thanks Martin and Jebus for responding - much appreciated!

Looking at photo I took of my Heating/Ventilation control panel compared to this version I found on internet. Mine is very basic. Does not feature the heated seats, DSA or temperature sensor? not 100% sure if that is what the 3 black horizontal openings top right are...

Would you say I have a standard heating system. It's not an electronic climate control system?

See images attached.

thanks,
Jak

some have reported success by spinning each dial back and forth rapidly about 20x per dial. This cleans up some of the oxidation on the contacts in behind each dial.

You may want to try switching out the panel next. Otherwise, sounds like a short somewhere.

It does sound like the fan speed switch, do what Pierre suggests - it helps to get a shoelace or similar, wrap it round and use to move the switch back and forwards quickly. Ten times should be enough

Hi guys - I did the spinning dials using string x 20 times. There is definitely an improvement but still cuts out after a while. Will check with Traynors for new panel. Thanks for all the input - appreciated!
