Default Immobiliser Fault - Intermitent Startup

Im trying to find a possible solution to a fault that doesnt quite match others on the forum.

On my journey home from work yesterday I went to the shops. Upon returning to my car, it refused to start. After an inspection, and a visit from the AA, we deemed it to be a bad starter motor.

However, randomly 5 hours later, I went to check the vehicle to take some stuff out of the boot, and thought i'd give it a start. Amazingly, it started with no issue, and a second time, and a third. So I thought it was fine.

Left for work this morning, car started fine. Left work to come home, car refuses to start again.

There is no errors displayed on the dash, the battery has been tested to be in good health and charge, no other interior or exterior electrical systems seem to be effected.

The only thing to note is that after trying many methods to start the vehicle, a couple of times the "Immobiliser - See Manual" message would display, however it was rare.

Does any one have any ideas what this could be?

Vehicle: 2004 S40 2.0D

Edit: I forgot to mention that all functions, including the release of the wheel lock, activate as normal. The car opperates perfectly normal till the ignition is switched to III. The relay for the starter activates with a click, but then nothing.
