Hiya.

New here and already with a headache of a topic...

I've had my 56 plate s40 2.0d sport since 2017, when it had 75k done. Currently has 125k miles on the clock and after 2 tiny accidents has been given cat N and written off by insurance company. My insurance neares the end and MOT is due to expire.

Apparently it needs a new link arm, but it also shudders when turning off and lately lost all power when I pressed the accelerator to the floor. After switching off and on it drove ok although a bit sluggish. Done major service and was told the link arm is broken and the car should not be driven, but no mention of any other issue. Cambelt has not been done yet, but I've put easily £3k in servicing and repair soi far. Fuel filter and pump changed etc.
At some point I found a little bit of oil underneath but it never happened again after.

My question:

Should I fix / invest in it and keep it [ I really like it ] or sell and spend £2500 on something else?

I've listed it for sale for £1k but I'm really having doubts, especially after treading the minefield of a secondhand car market. I could invest £1000-1500 into it if it would mean driving for another year or two, but... A ticking bomb?

Your thoughts?

I'm in Birmingham/Coventry and always struggled to get a decent/honest mechanic who could tell me upfront what I could fix in the car to keep it for another 60k miles.

Let me just add [ if not obvious ] that I don't know much about cars and with covid wrecking my life atm I'm looking at minimising risk of breakdown.

Help!

If it's too risky in your opinion I will probably relist at £700-800 with 5th medusa added as spare and full history and receipts. Ehh... This car has been like a friend to me [ as silly as it sounds, I'm a sentimental sod ].

Edit1543: If you could maybe recommend a mechanic in Coventry who could look at it and appraise the repairs or give realistic opinion on expected longevity?
