Default Cabin/ heater fan

Posted this in the wrong section at first attempt, should have been posted in this section- Apologies for the double post, albeit with a slight edit.

Hi All.

Don't know if this topic has been covered elsewhere, I've searched the site for info concerning the problem and couldn't find anything.

Anyway, its all to do with the heater fan. The car is a 2001, V70 T5 with air-con if thats relevant.

If the car is static or moving in a steady straight line, the fan sounds normal. Its makes a very noticeable whirring, grinding, squeaking noise when the car brakes or is going round a corner. At first, it sounded as though my front nearside brake discs or pads needed replacing because the noise sounds similar to braking with worn brakes. It sounds as though the momentum of the fan is causing it to rub the sides of the fan case. It doesn't matter if the fan is spinning slowly or quickly, the effect is the same. As soon as you come to a full stop, the noise ends abruptly, it doesn't "tail off" gradually.

If the fan is turned off, there is none of this noise.

I'm thinking "shot" motor/ "shaft" bearings. Or bent shaft.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so, how did you correct it? I don't relish the thought of having to take the car to a garage to have the repair done, along with the probable, very large bill. I don't know why, it may be just my luck but I can foresee the need for a new fan motor. Hope not.

Any and all info is appreciated- Thanks in advance.

Hi I would agree entirely with your diagnosis. When the fans running there is a kind of gyroscopic loading on the bearings, which allows the fan assembly to foul and the motor bearings to squeak depending on the G forces from the car. Had this before on an 850; new fan motor I'm afraid.
