engine overheating
I have a 1999 S80 T6. This week, the car overheated although the temperature gauge was just above midpoint. There was no indication of coolant boiling in the reservoir, no indication of oil in the coolant and no indication of coolant in the exhaust. The engine was obviously hotter that normal, but the engine fan was not running. On further checks, I believe the coolant is circulating. The check engine warning will be on sometimes, but not always. There is power going to the fan. This is a used car purchase, so I called the dealer and confirmed the engine fan had been replaced several years ago under warranty. 3 weeks ago was the last time I noticed the engine fan working - it stayed on after parking the car. I believe the problem is either in the temperature sensor relay that engages the fan, or the fan motor. Is this a reasonable conclusion based on the information? How can I test these components to determine which one to replace? Is there something else I should test or look at? Thanks for any help you are able to offer.
