C70 roof not closing fully

2008 C70. When closing the roof the front section clunks down onto the top of the windscreen frame is and leaves about a 1 inch gap making the final roof locking impossible. Car currently isn't water tight.

Anyone experienced anything similar? I've only had the car for a week. Thanks

I had a problem with the roof on my 2007 C70 - by and large problems are unusual with these, so we obviously both hit unlucky!

Mine wasn't quite the same, as it was the final stage of closing that wouldn't work, but it sounds as if the problem is similar in that the roof is getting to a certain stage in the process then stopping.

I presume you have checked the obvious, ie nothing is catching anywhere that is preventing the roof making full movements?

After that I can't offer much guidance other than to say that mine proved to be that the LHS roof locking catch had moved slightly out of true, and the hall sensor at that point had packed up. Mine was put right by the main dealer and the fault took a lot of tracking down I am afraid.

Apparently there are about 14 sensors - if one is dodgy then that can be all it needs. I know the technician checked the alignment with the roof catches by removing the inside trim where the sun-visors are which lets you see up from underneath. If you are happy to tackle that you could try seeing if there is an obvious fault there.

Otherwise the best approach would be to get the error codes read and see if the roof system has thrown any up that pinpoint the problem.

I agree with David that faults with the roof systems are rare, I had a fault with mine but that was self inflicted I eventually fixed it myself after a lot of head scratching.

My advise is the same as David's have a look around to see if there is anything obvious (I assume you have already done this) did anything seem odd the last time it worked properly? It's likely to be a sensor and my only advise is if you can't see anything loose or misaligned get it to a Volvo dealer. All the so called specialists I contacted ran for the hills when I mentioned 'a fault with the hood'. If you bought it from a dealer get in contact with them as the car isn't fit for purpose.

The dashboard displays 'STOP SAFELY ROOF CAN BE DAMAGED'. Driving the car in this state set off the audible alarm, unfortunately I had no choice as I needed to get the car home.
From what you've said David this is very similar to the problem you had with the lock catch being misaligned.

When arriving home I opened the roof again, at the beginning of the opening process the roof did slot into place. The roof opened all the way and closed all the way so at least the car is weather sealed for now.
During this operation however I noticed that there are some cables hanging down on the passengers side of the middle roof section. These cabled hang down during both the opening and closing processes. When the roof closes these cables are getting caught and prevent the interior fabric from returning to it's original position.

The car is going back to the garage where I bought it to be looked at by a Volvo specialist in Leeds. I'll have a chat with them directly and hope that it's just something small.

Yes - that's the standard message, and the car does get very upset being driven in that state, as I recall!

If it is sometimes working and sometimes not, and you can see cables actually catching something, then that may well be the problem. It's a complex process opening and closing and each step has to complete successfully for the next step to take place. The slightest problem will throw the whole process out.

That document you link to is really helpful in terms of understanding what goes on.

Glad to hear it's going to a specialist. My main dealer put their master technician onto mine, and I know him reasonably well to chat with and he was telling me how difficult finding problems with these roofs can be on the rare occasions they play up.

I hope you get it sorted soon - it's not the time of year for a dodgy roof!

I don't know if this helps at all but i have the same problem that the roof wasn't lining up correctly when closing that last little bit, I found out eventually it was because of a fault in the drivers door that was stopping it from dropping the window the bit it needs to.
The glass is what was causing the issue, and i managed to close it by just having the window open, the door fault i have happens rarely and just needs the door slamming to fix.

Which Volvo specialist are you going to in Leeds, i have spoken to the one on Kirkstall road about a fault i had before and was not impressed with the knowledge or attitude of the person who answered the call

As said above they are very complex in the way they work with 2 rotation sensors and i think 15 static sensors,

Any of those give wrong signal and roof stops,

There is a pressure release under rear bench seat for emergency roof closure but be warned the roof drops like a stone so unless its almost closed or you have a couple of friends to hand to hold roof and guide it down,

There is also a locking mechanism behind the plastic clip on front of roof lining to lock roof down manually

With the c70 Roof, id advise taking it to a dealer, the diagnostic tool Vida we use is very good at finding the problem.

James it sounds like you may have a similar issue to me. Mine was caused by a broken clip that made the fabric catch. For me though this didn't prevent the switch from working. I drove for a few miles with the roof not quite closed and when opening and closing the roof after that it slotted into place.
I've had no issues since the garage replaced the clip.

I haven't attempted manual operation but it does look like a 2 person job.
