Engine Service, Brake Assist, ABS/Anti Skid Service Required
Hi there, I hope someone can help me out. I have recently bought a 2005 S60 D5 SE Manual with 84000 miles on the clock.
When I bought the car there was an engine service light on and ABS light/brake failure message. The first thing I did was have the car serviced at my local independent garage. They replaced my front discs, brake pads and ABS sensors and modules as well as carry out a complete service. When i got the car back all lights were off and the car was driving ok. After only 30mins the 'Engine Service Required' light came back on (stopping the Cruise Control working). I took the car back into the garage and they reset the message. The message then stayed off for approximately 20 miles before coming back on (and stopping the cruise control again). Although the light had been coming on I continued to drive the car for a week (covering approximately 150 miles). This morning I was greeted by 'Brake assist service required', ' Engine service require' and 'ABS/Anti-skid service required' messages and the ABS light has come on. Having had all of this replaced just 8 days ago I am concerned this is something bigger. Can anyone suggest what this could be and what i should do? Thanks a lot for your help. Gordon |

Hi Simmy,
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if they did but I will ask them when they reopen on Monday. Would driving with a cracked ring over the weekend cause damage? Thanks for your help, Gordon |

You should be able to see if the rings have been changed they will be clean . with no rust or dirt . probably wont cause any more damage as u have already driven some miles since your repair

Sounds like you need a better garage.
I have never seen a bad sensor on a P2 except of course where the wirings been damaged or some muppets damaged it on removal. What modules did they replace? The rings are a common issue and a quick easy fix. I'd get it clarified as to what was actually done and what diagnostic approach was taken to prove the items were required. Codes and live data proof. Other garages firing the parts cannon at the customers expense is how I usually get new customers. I prove the faults with data before replacing anything.

Thanks Chammyman.
I have new reluctor rings as i now remember being shown the old ones. Surprisingly the messages have stopped coming on this afternoon. I still get the Engine Service Required message though which prevents me from using cruise control. I believe the sensors etc were in a really bad way when they were replaced as the car had not been lovely looked after. Thanks for your help, Gordon |

Well fingers crossed the ABS lights stay off.
The engine service light could be a few things, did they give you any codes when they read it?

On a manual, the specific message of "Engine Service Required" no mention of "Urgent" or "System" or a yellow warning triangle but there's a loss of cruise control usually means the clutch position sensor fault.
A proper diagnostic code read will confirm though.

Thanks to both of you. No I never had any feedback about codes.
The same messages came on again for a journey this morning and have since gone off again (the ABS ones). I drove for 45miles this morning before the Engine Service message came on. I think it needs to go back and be properly diagnosed. What type of code reader should i ask for them to use? Many thanks |

VIDA DICE is that main one but realistically most places don't have it. Chances are the place you took it too only had either a simple OBD2 compliant scanner or an outdated professional one.
If your ever through Glasgow way you can pop over and see me if you want and I'll stick the scanner on it. PM me for details if you want.
