volvo 2001 t5 need new engine. newer t5 engine?
Hello good people!
I just bought a 2001 s60 t5 manuall with 290k km. Last owner said the camshaft seal have popped out twice, he change the valve seal and piston rings with no luck. the engine has a 18t turbo, chip, open filter etc. Im thinking buying a "new" used engine so the question is. my engine code is B5234T3. when i search for newer engine like 2004 they still have the same engine code, but does it fit my car without another ecu or something like that? what about for example 2006 t5 engine? plug and play? i just want a plug and play engine. This was very bad written, im writing in frustration and very stressed. Thank you so much for your answer! |

Is the camshaft seal that pops out, on a VVT camshaft?
My camshaft seal popped out but I had absolutely no buildup of crankcase pressure. Mine was caused by excessive play in the bearings inside the VVT unit. I replaced the VVT unit and the seal now stays in fine. Have you done the "glove test" to check for crankcase pressure?

Your answer might save my wallet! Thanks man!🙂

NEW UPDATE! Hello again! Glove test went good, it got sucked in pretty fast. Back to the vvt, i think ive been mistaken. i thought it was vvt on both camshaft, but it looks like its not. its the camshaft who is closest to the front of the car. The engine vibrates a bit, but i think it has stiffer engine mounts, exhaust smoke is pretty white.

2.3 only has exhaust VVT. If you have excess pressure its commonly the PCV system blocked

Your glove test sounds good. For a turbo engine, there are though two different sources of vacuum depending on whether you are using turbo boost or not at a given time. Presumably you tested it at idle, but to be absolutely certain you also need to test again with the turbo generating boost during the glove test.
This is the best description I've found about how it all works and how to test it - http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showth...es-and-testing Presumably your camshaft seal must be fitted OK at the moment, otherwise your glove test wouldn't work. So, even though it has fallen out twice before, what makes you think it will do it again as long as it is fitted correctly now? The fitting of a camshaft seal on a VVT shaft is such that the seal is created against the VVT hub and not the camshaft itself. This requires the positioning of the seal to be very precise, and importantly for it not to be fitted all the way to the bottom of the machined recess in the cylinder head as is normally expected. I have VVT on both shafts, so I don't know if there are any similar quirks related to fitting the seals correctly without VVT, can anyone else confirm please?

Hello! I will test the pressure in the crankcase under boost and see if the pcv system works. Thanks for that link Last owner told me to not drive hard because it will most likey pop out, he said the last time he fitted the seal he used glue. I think it sounds a bit wierd, but he is a mechanic so i think he have fitted it correctly.

Im at school in another city, thats why im slow with the updates. I was just outside and testet the pressure in the crankcase when the car is under boost. The glow inside the cabin got very big under high boost. So the pvc system is clugged somewhere. Im extremly happy now! Thanks for help! Im going to read the thread you linked me and find out where to start. again, Thank you!
