This picture you mean?

One of those will be your brake lights, the other will be for cruise and there are two separate switches, usually the cheaper of the two will be the one you need.

I've got a feeling I might have a couple of brake light switches knocking about somewhere. I'll have a look tomorrow

Why do you need to fire up the engine to make the brake lights work? They're wired to work without the ignition.
Ah yes indeed, but I live alone and the car is parked away from shiny things (currently no MOT but that is tomorrow). the only way i can tell if the bulb is not working is via the dash light

You must be better with your fingers than I am. That and being tall must have some benefits, eh?

Do you possess a broom aka hairy stick?

Put the end of the handle on the brake pedal, push down and then wedge the head of the broom on the head restraint - you may need to adjust the angle of the backrest to do this.

Alternatively, scour the charity shops for a shooting stick - unfold the handle and put the end of the stick on the brake pedal. Push down on the pedal then slide the seat part of the shooting stick under the steering wheel and release the pedal gently.

Last resort - get a length of batten, push the pedal down with your foot, slide the batten through the steering wheel and use a pencil to make a mark on the underside where the steering wheel and wood meet.
Cut off the top part of the batten, secure that across the batten to make a cross and use in a similar manner to the shooting stick.

.
Ah, the ol' "fast-idle stick" routine. I am familiar. No I don't have one, or anything that fits that bill. I got the light working anyway, connections not great and will probably stop working on the drive to the MOT centre but it's the thought that counts.

I use a brick and just wedge it under the clutch slightly and that does the trick for me
