Default 123gt: Steering Column bush/link keeps 'sliding down'

1968 123gt
Replaced the steering column bushes, and refitted the 'cap' that fits over the bottom column splines, can only go down so far as the bolt must fit in the notch.

I loosened the top clamp on the upper steering column and tightened with the bushes snug in position.

But after a few short drives, the upper column has moved down around 6mm exposing about half the new bushes. Note this is the same position the original bushes where in.

So 2 questions:
Is there a way to keep the upper column from sliding down (i did the brace that keeps it on very tight but it still moved down)

Is this the wrong 'cap' fitted on the end of the lower steering column and is there one with an alternately placed bolt that will fit in the lower column notch and allow it to fit lower down.

Thanks for your time.

I believe your steering is a bit different from my PV544 steering so I can't really help other than bumping this thread up the list for you and saying that a look through the factory service manual seems in order...

Leo;

Having never had the need to take one apart, I'm not intimately familiar with the assembly or how it might be adjusted and secured, but you might find a look at the exploded assembly diagram in GCP.SE helpful.

Good Hunting
