Default Squeaking below 1000rpm

I'll start the story off with a bit of history. I've come from a Ford Mondeo which has a belt tensioner issue as common as muck. I ignored it and drove it around for a few years.

My V50 D5 (05) with 70k on the clock has recently started to squeak at idle. Put a little bit of load on it - 1000rpm or so - and it goes away.

I had a friend look around the engine bay and he couldn't locate the noise so I just carried on as normal.

I've done a couple of thousand miles like this thinking it was like the mondeo and nothing to worry about but I've decided to show some concern and it seems that there are a LOT of horror stories.

I'm not sure if there have been any recalls done on the car or anything else like that. Reg below - yes it shows OB instead of 08 due to google searching forums:
NM OB FYP

I'm also not sure about any other belt replacements. I know different belts need changing and I can't see any log of them being done recently.

What should I be expecting? Alternator belt on its own? Timing belt at the same time etc etc

Thanks

Chris.

Used to have a Focus 1.6 which had an anoing squeak at idle. Tlaking to a Ford spanner monkey, he told me it was a known issue, no problem to concern and could be banished easily and cheaply.

Get some chalk pencil sticks, the same as you use for dartboard scores; and grind into dust. Then sprinkle a pinch of the dust around the alternator belt area. Will keep it quiet for weeks. When the noise appears do again. apparently it doesnt accumulate and does no harm. Does the trick though.

This isn't on the mondeo. I had the issue on a mondeo but now I have the issue on the Volvo.

I am more concerned about horror stories about what can go wrong and with the car costing as much as it did I'd rather cough up money to fix it pro-actively rather than re-actively

I KNOW the issue ISNT on the Mondeo! Squeaks, rattles and knocks are NOT model specific. I USED to have a Focus and a Mondeo, Escort, Anglia and now a V50, but WHEN I did have a Focus; it had a squeak.

If I come across a similar squeak on the V50, then I would use the chalk dust. Only trying to help.

FWIW my '02 D5 came to me with a squeak/squeal at low rpm.

I diagnosed the alternator bearings and had it reconditioned. The noise remained.

I replaced the aux belt tensioner. The noise remained.

I replaced the belt. Silence

IMHO go for the simplest/cheapest first - i.e. the aux belt.

Works for me. Cheap is best. When I had the problem, the belt was okay, tension okay, but chalk (dead cheap) worked.

Default That Squeak

I run a 1992 940 2.0 litre petrol and my daughter runs a V50 D5.
I posted about a "graunchy squeak" on my 940 after initial start up thinking that it was probably something expensive about to go wrong and most replies pointed at the auxiliary drive belts (V belts). To be honest I doubted them. I enquired with my MOT tester man who knows Volvos quite well and he suggested "next time the noise appears spray some WD40 or similar on the belt for a second". I did and the noise disappeared instantly so I now knew what the cause was and it wasn't going to break expensively. The chalk dust method is a similar approach and may well work and put your mind at rest.
Another strange noise we encountered on the V50 for one time only was whilst driving to North Yorks moors a couple of weeks ago. After a run down the A19 dual carriageway in the rain with AC on to prevent misting up we slowed down in Cleveland to negotiate the urban roads and each time we slowed to a stop in traffic there was a strange "tinny" scraping noise which curiously appeared to be coming from the central dashboard air vents. After about 3 instances of this we switched off the AC and the noise did not return. We've since used the car in similar circumstances with the AC on and the noise has not re-appeared.

I've also experienced that very same rattly tinny noise today after a drive from London to Nottingham. Only noticed it after I had gone back out in the car after arriving and like you switching off the aircon stopped the noise immediately.

Hopefully someone on here can point us in the right direction on a potential cause and moreso that it's not of the expensive variety.
