Default Anyone changed the locks - what's involved

My 05 T5 has only one key, I'm breaking an 04 T5 that has 3 keys and 2 fobs and I'm thinking of transferring the keys over. Other than the door, boot and ignition/steering lock and the black box above the instrument cluster, is there anything else needs changing?

Nope, thats it. Easy to swap over too, doors and boot is easier with the handles/trim removed though.

Hi Tony,

I think the chip in the key has to match what is programmed into the ECU. So I don't think your approach would work.

Talk to Timpsons. As per various recent posts, they have recently upgraded their key cutting (and chipping facility) so it may now be the cheapest option (rather than getting a new matching key cut by Volvo). May not be available at all branches.
There was a recent post about this. I think that was for a V70 not a C70, but the same principles apply.

Let us know what you find out, because others (including myself) are in the same boat (1998 V70).

Thanks
Steve

Maybe I was dreaming about the Timpsons thing! Sorry if that is the case.

+ Glove box lock (optional)!

Thanks for the replies. It's the extra fob, I was more interested in and I think they cost a small fortune to program. I was under the impression that the black box above the instruments had all the electronics to comunicate with the key and fob.

The fobs are coded to the the "black box" above the accelerator pedal - there's no problem swapping the black box from car to car as long as the fobs stay with the same black box!

Re the Timpsons key cutting/coding the posts were here

Black box above the accelerator pedal? What does the one above the instrument cluster do?

Hi Tony

The black box for the fobs is under the dash above the accelerator pedal, not above the instrument cluster.
Easy to swap over and try the new fobs.

Keys and their chips are independent of the remote system.

Obviously the key has to physically match the locks.

Ast85, have you used Timpsons yourself recently - and was that for 850, V70 or C70?

Steve

I think the box above the instrument cluster is the receiver for the remote fobs. Just the receiver. The box above the accelerator pedal takes the received signal and validates it.

Assuming the receiver is working, you just change the box above the accelerator pedal and test with the matching fobs.

98% sure !
Easy to test.

Just looked

Part number for one of my
Lock Alarm Control boxes is 9459266. I have some others which I think are alternate part numbers.
Get at it by removing the foot panel, then reaching up.

Part number for the other part on top of the speedo (upper dash out job) is
9472725

HTH
