Default Why do the aux belts fail early?

Hello

My aux belt is suppose to last 108,000 but failed early and luckily no damage done. Luckily volvo replaced mine for free.
Why aren't volvo doing anything about this as it seems to be a common complaint.

Aux belt changes due every 54k, so should be due for at least 2nd change at 108k, along with timing belt.

Do you mean timing belt?

No the auxiliary belt. Mine snapped at about 42,000 and was full of splits. Volvo replaced it and the tensioner free as they say it shouldnt have snapped.

The aux belt is the weak link on the D5. The aux belt tensioners were modified to help protect the belt which, if it snaps, can wind itself around the shared drive pulley axle and force its way onto the cam belt drive pulley derailing the cam belt. There needs to be a protection guard to prevent this happening but Volvo chose to reduce the change time for the aux belt and modify the tensioner. There is a design for a DIY guard which I have but I'm not up to making it. It's probably better to be over sensitive about changing the aux belt rather than just inspecting it and making a judgement on its longevity!

Wow - that’s bad - should have at least some built-in safety margin (60k?) but to fail that early is

Default Aux belt

Auxiliary belt renewed each service according to schedule on my 2015 xc60 d5.
Does this point to a design weakness or ultra caution?

That's not right , the volvo service interval for the belt is 54000 miles ..

Very lucky , it sounds like you haven't been near a dealer for anything for quite a while ..and missed the recall

I don't know if that is right or not.
The belt has been changed last three services at a Volvo garage and checking on Volvo Service Price Indicator it is listed as a service item.
Where would I find a definitive service schedule.
