It's always said when buying an oil filter to make sure you get one with a non-return valve,I can see the sense in this and have no problem with it,but what does this valve look like? What is it you can see that tells you it's got one or not? I even asked a "technician" this the other day and he had no idea saying he just fitted whatever the parts department gave him.

It's not a non-return valve per say, rather a check valve or pressure relief valve. If the oil filter becomes clogged, the oil pump will keep pumping pressurised oil through it. If the filter doesn't have a valve fitted, the pressure can't vent.

Two different things

Pressure relief valve allows oil to flow when the filter media is plugged

Anti-drainback valve prevents the oil from draining from the filter when the engine is shut off.

Oil filters tend to have pressure relief valves. Non-return valves are often fitted to oil filter housings or within the oil circuit, and have nothing to do with the filters themselves.

Not sure of your terminology, anti drain back valves ARE part of the filter.

Oil pressure relief valves I've changed[admittedly not on a Volvo] have been in the vicinity of the oil pump where as I understand it non-return valves are part of the filter and are there to stop the oil draining back when the car is stood therefore preventing oil starvation on first start up? Anyway terminology apart when you take a new filter out of the box what can you see that tells you it has such a valve fitted?

Looking at c1800's link above, if you can stick yer finger in then assume it doesn't have the anti-syphon valve? If it does then can we assume it also has bypass and anti-drainback ??..... I think yes?
