Do you mean from 1st, 2nd etc? If so then yes, it’s when you shift it in to Drive from Park or reverse. Ironically it’s not done it today.

I've had this issue and took my car to my local Independent Volvo dealer. He fixed this by putting the car into S mode and then driving along for 10 mins or so using the gear lever to go up and down the gears. He advised that this is a known issue if you don't use the S mode. After he had done this, the D selection was smooth again. He did advise to use the S mode regularly or go through the above process every so often.

I have the same car, same age, 47,000 miles, same problem which started two years ago at around 30,000 miles. On mine the problem is worse when the weather is hot. There is another thread about this elsewhere on the forum. It is a problem known to Volvo since 2012 when the bumping into D first happened. Volvo found the new gearbox software and adaption worked in a lot of cases. They ran courses for their main dealers in about 2016 on how to replace gearbox internal main shaft seals with modified ones. Thanks to forum member Clan for this information.

Early this summer, Ray Chapman, York told me they have no knowledge at all of this fault. Marshall, Leeds were however very knowledgeable and helpful. In June this year Marshall carried out a gearbox software upgrade and adaption of gearbox. £140 plus vat. This is the first thing to try and often cures the problem. It improved mine but has not cured it. Marshall need to experience the fault before going on to the next stage, but the fault is intermittent so this is a problem. The next stage is asking Volvo for a contribution to repairing or replacing the gearbox. Volvo would only consider this if the car has full main dealer service history.

I shall have to wait for the fault to deteriorate to the extent where the dealer is certain to be able to experience it for themselves, then go on from there. I must say I am very disappointed to have a fault like this on what is otherwise a very decent motor.

The comment about Chapmans in York is no surprise to me. I'm very unimpressed with their service.

Is the box hot enough, the box needs to be up to temp 50C for it reach required viscosity, normally a 20+ minute drive should do it under normal weather conditions, if its colder out then it may need a bit longer, will depends on how its driven, if its like miss daisy then deffo perhaps 30 mins

I have a 2014 XC70 with 58,500 miles on the clock. We brought the car at 46,000 miles and all was fine at purchase. We first experienced a 'thump' when selecting D 3 months later when parking. The thump was sometimes very aggressive. This thump only happened when selecting D when the car is warm, never when cold. At 55,500 miles we had the gearbox oil changed and adaptions reset and it has been fine ever since. This was completed a Volvo specialist for about £350. The gearbox changed gear smoothly both before and after the work but the thump for now is gone. Not sure if this helps but this is my experience.

So having driven the car Myself since my husband noticed the issue, it’s only happening intermittently, and only when shifting the car in the drive, it will lurch forward a little bit.

This is pretty much exactly what mine is doing. Unfortunately I’m probably going to have to pay through the nose and take it to Bolvo as I don’t appear to have a Volvo specialist near me
