I'll find out more on Friday, but there's a few knowledgable people who suggest suction from the oil filler cap with engine running means PCV failure – perhaps it's the amount of suction mine is displaying: Flickr isn't working with videos at the moment so I can't share mine on here at the moment for you to see/hear. I will say that on facebook Volvo groups there is a difference of opinion with some adamant that if the PCV is gone it blows, not sucks... hopefully on Friday I'll find out more. Incidentally someone else posted about vacuum/suction from the filler cap on a Focus ST225 group and got this response:

I started doubting myself a bit so had to refresh memory, there are some posts regarding that issue on SS. basically, to quote one user: "Slight suction is by design. Any significant pressure, positive or negative, is not." So we are both right, kinda of The best indication of actual PCV issue when you hear a weird noise that STOPS when you pull dipstick out. Also EML code is triggered in more serious case.

Ok, just to add to this regarding my situation, I've changed the PCV and can confirm that the sucking has remained exactly the same, so some 'suck' is what we should all have with these T5s.
No whistle on the test drive but as it was intermittent I think I'll need a few more drives to confirm. However, I took the old unit apart and saw that the diaphragm was perfect, no holes or tears so I may have changed the PCV unnecessarily – which my wallet doesn't like but it's done now . Taking the 'lid' off to inspect the diaphragm in situ would be very tricky, so an option could have been to take it out, inspect, if all is well simply put back in, but at least I have a new one in there now which should be good for another 10 years. This local garage also did a smoke test and found no leaks by the way. Now this local garage I used are trustworthy but are very busy, and they noted that it was quite gunked up with oil around the PCV. They also changed one of the pipes from it as that too didn't look great. Just recently there was half-price oil deal from ECP so I bought some decent Shell oil and left that in the boot with the instruction to change it if they felt it needed it. The car was only serviced 2 months ago but after driving home from that service I checked the oil level out of curiosity: was a little higher than 'full' (where it was before I took it in) but what surprised me was that the oil looked old and dark, hence me buying some recently with a view to getting it changed again. The local garage questioned whether it had been changed but I've no reason to doubt the outfit that serviced the car back in January, and like I said the oil level was different after collecting the car. Perhaps the gunked up PCV and pipe might have been responsible for darkening fresh oil quite quickly, or maybe it simply needed another drain and refill to get rid of the previous old oil? Dunno, but I do now know that the oil in there looks lovely and clear and clean. Test driving it it's running perfectly, just as before but maybe a touch smoother? Might just be me trying to justify the PCV bill perhaps!

Yes, if I see the oil get dark again quickly then I'll do just that!
