Road trips with 240 DL6 safe ?
Hello all, I am new to the forum
Just bought a 244 DL6 1983 with 170,000 km on it. Was well maintained by the guy I bought it from. He collected them and did the work himself (a mechanic himself). Wanted to know if any of you ever did long trips with a 244 DL6 (200km+) and if its safe to do so. Wouldnt want to break down in the middle of nowhere. Cheers - Emmanuel |

It should be fine.
Our 300,000km+ 240GL regularly travels from Hampshire to Germany. (And back!) |

Any car can break down-even brand new ones-take sensible steps[i.e. check fluid levels, tyre pressures etc]prior to setting off and it should be fine.Possibly carry a spare fan belt in the boot-although a quick look over of this as part of your pre-trip checks should be fine-and enjoy your trip.I would quite happily jump in either of my Volvos[albeit they're newer than yours at 1995 and 2000]and drive them anywhere without hesitation.I'm no "boy racer" but am happy to keep up with the traffic and stop if in need of washroom facilities/a cup of coffee/both.

Typically, there'll be a 400 mile dash to try to catch a ferry after leaving too late and there'll also be low gear pottering on wriggly hillsides. Our road trips tend to cover at least 1000 miles a week. Sometimes quite a lot more. The Volvo is just one of the cars we might use - we don't discriminate! |

I don't think you would have any problems with that car. Give it a thorough check over first though.

As a precautionary measure, i'd suggest draining the water from the fuel filter (should be a tap of some sort on the bottom of the filter) and adding a fuel system/injector cleaner to a full tank of fuel before you set off. Also carry a spare can of fuel, just in case you find yourself in the middle of nowhere running low on fuel!
If the car has covered 170000km since new, that's about 100000 miles, a figure most D6 owners would consider just about run in so i wouldn't envisage any problems. As mentioned by others, take a few of the "obvious" spares with you such as belts, fuel etc and give the car a general check over. I'm guessing it recently had an oil/filter change from everything you say but i'd certainly change the oil/filter on your return. I believe the interval for cars of your age was 3000miles/5000km for oil/filter changes, you'll be doing 2000km so would be wise to change the oil after as it would be approaching the 5000km figure assuming the previous owner and you have both used it since the last oil/filter change. Other than that, enjoy your road trip! *** EDIT *** Just noticed you said 200km and NOT 2000km - might make some of my comments seem a bit over the top!
