When my 1991 240 is ready for an exhaust, I’d like the option.🤔
In a turbo car the lambda is right up by the turbo in the downpipe so no need to do anything. On a non turbo 940 it is in the cat so it would need a hole cutting out of the cat delete and a boss welding on to it for the lambda sensor to go in. I'm not up to speed on the 200 series but I imagine it would be in the cat on those too.

Is it worth fitting a type approved cat - they are relatively expensive.

You do NOT need a Type Approved cat on a 1991 car and as Luke pointed out, you can delete the cat as it's not a legal requirement.
You will find the power and economy both improve without the cat and as long as you have somewhere to mount the Lambda sensor, everything will be fine.

Type Approved cats are only mandatory for cars from 2001 on and as you pointed out, are considerably more expensive than standard repalcement cats. I'm surprised there is even a TA cat available for any 9xx models as they weren't made in 2001. If your cat is rattling (and not just the heatshield around it) then it needs removing as it won't do you any favours at all, whether you replace with a standard cat or a straight through pipe which would be better is up to you.
