Default Burgundy Paint Code 418

My current 940 has the paint code 418. The bonnet and roof need respraying due to the lacquer falling off.

My dilemma is that the paint code, which I think is 418 is the same as for a previous 940 which was a much darker shade. This means there's no point just ordering some based on the code because it will be too dark.

Can anyone shed any light on this ? I'd order some online and put it on with a spray gun if I could get the correct shade.

I remember in the good old days when our local car spares shop (now sadly gone) had a cross match list and it showed the closest match aerosol paint based on the code. It was great because you could buy a can, check if it was right, then get them to order enough. I suppose I could try Halfords, but I hate giving them money, and I wasn't impressed with the last paint I bought in there.

Excuse the fox in the photo. It's the only one that I can find with an example of the colour that paint code actually produces. The 940 I have now is a few shades lighter than that.

Second pic is current car, which hopefully you can see is nowhere near as dark as the first, yet they have the same paint code.

The lighter code paint is 428 Coral Red. It's similar to 418 Regent Red.

When I had a new wing sprayed to match my red 940, paint code 428, the friend who did this used a gadget to scan the existing paint on adjacent panels to get the mix to match the twenty-five year old paint on the car rather than how it looked from the factory. This was very effective since I was having the wing sprayed stand-alone to fit myself. Apparently not all paint shops have this technology but based on my experience I’d recommend finding one that does.
