i'm going to add a T after the fuel filter and make my own return line to the pump

Don't do anything like that it will be expensive to revert back .. Return from where ? you need to know how it works before you can fix anything ... you said yourself it doesn't have a return line on the fuel rail. or a pressure regulator in the lines around the fuel filter area ..

Default s60 high fuel pressure

Success! looks like the previous owner replaced the fuel line between the pump and filter.
They eliminated the return connection to the pump when they did. I put a T in the pressure line back to the pump return connection and now my fuel pressure is down to about 60.

Thats good ! but where is the pressure regulator then?
Its much easier to understand when it is there in front of you of course 😃

Regulator is inside the cover of the pump - when pressure in the return line gets above 50, the valve opens and dumps fuel back into the pump,

ok so where does the other end of that return line go to ? I am trying to determine which of the 3 systems you have .. It wont be the PEM system by your chassis number .
