To simplify the main findings in this thread: Volvo are systematically useless at Sat Nav and their systems are rarely as good as cheap stand alone off the shelf units. I knew that applied to my 2012 XC70 but now I know it applies across the marque. In comparison, my 2012 system must have been almost the best these twits managed to provide and that's really sad! And now they don't support it any more!

The main advantage of the built-in system is just that, built-in. No loose parts or cables.
There's another advantage, and that's dead reckoning. Phones or navigation devices like Garmin's Nüvi are useless in tunnels. Volvo's RTI just carries on, using gyroscope and sensors on the wheels.

I have a bunch of Garmin's navigation devices, after ten years as software tester for them. But I still use the built-in one, just because it's there all the time. And it's integrated. When it speaks, the radio is silent. But if the phone rings, the navigation is silent.

Looking at the main difference between the two systems, it's the Sensus Navigation is compatible with traffic information via the internet. Sensus RTI supports only TMC via FM broadcasting.

Knowing how a lot of such procurment goes (I'm in the middle of it, albeit not for cars), they asked for the internet function, ability to transfer destinations via Volvo on Call and some other stuff. Then you get offered something that exists and can do that, or easily be modified to do that.

By the way, it supports only four via points, not eight.
By the way, it can't display a split screen with two different map scales.
By the way, it doesn't support POI upload in the same way.
But, oh yes, it shows images of road signs at major intersections.

Well, that's fine. As long as it has internet traffic information.
