UK TV request - 1984 Volvo 240T Group A
My name is Sarah and I work for North One, a television production company in Birmingham. I am working on a new series for Channel 4 all about iconic vehicles from around the world. I am trying to locate a 1984 Volvo 240T Group A ("flying brick") and wondered if any members knew where I might be able to track one down? Forgive my ignorance, but would private individuals ever have been able to purchase these ?
If anyone knows anyone who now owns one of knows who would be best to contact I'd be really grateful for any information. Many thanks, Sarah |

Hi, I believe there is a real one at the Volvo factory museum in Sweden, but not sure about privately owned ones in the UK. Your programme will be of great interest on here I'm sure.
Bet some Turbo fiends will chime in soon though! Good luck, Jim |

It might depend on what the focus of the story is going to be, because Volvo did actually sell a 240 Turbo Group A special for road use in the USA to meet the required homologation numbers, but mechanically they weren't the same as the proper Group A race cars - and they didn't look like the proper Group A cars as Volvo North America were still using the 70's headlights (which made a big difference). So you might find someone who's imported a US one for some reason, if you get lucky. *edit* Wait, wat? That car Rocinante listed is Dick Prince's car! I get my 242 serviced (and yes fixed) by the same guy who did the mechanical bits of the rebuild on that! Am I reading that it's in France now, or is that site doing a bit of a dodgy & the buyer will find out they have to import it from Australia? If anything it proves there can't be many left, and a visit to the USA may be the only way to see a road car ... |

To the best of my knowledge, the 240 Turbo wasn't a UK model at any point, much less the racing variety. I believe in the USA a 242 Turbo could be bought new back in the 80s but that would have been a road going version, rather than the Group A race model.
That said, there are a few 240 turbos in the UK that have been converted by enthusiasts such as those who lurk on here, again they're likely to be road cars rather than race but you may strike lucky with a replica. Good luck with your search, looking forward to the program coming out!
