Default Penta engine- What is it?

First off, apologies as this may be in the wrong part of the forum, but being redblock based and I had redblocks before defecting to d5, I thought the best place would be to ask here.

Looking at a Fishing boat. Fitted with a 2.0 penta carburetted engine.
Am I right to assume this is a B200 with a carburettor and a different camshaft?

Reason I want to know is that it has supposedly been "Overheated" and there is top end noise. Bottom end is fine apparently.

If there is a top end damage, could I just bung a decent 531 head on and make sure the camshaft is fine?

Or should/could I haul it out, and drop a b230fk in with a standalone management system?

I don’t ‘know’ specifics however I understand the Pentagon has altered intakes and outlets, revised Camshaft and various other marinised aspects.

I think a bit more research may be required here?

Volvo penta engines of that era came in many types over the years.

If the engine is an aq115, then it is akin to a b20 from an Amazon or similar era car.

If it is an aq120/aq125, then it is akin to a b21/b23 from 240s and the like,

If it is an aq131/aq151/aq171 then it is b230 derived.

I have never known of a b200 derived penta- only b20.

Here is what an aq115 looks like:

Well, It's a start. Thanks so far. It definitely doesnt look like what was pictured from nordicar.

It MAY be a b20, picture suggests it, But I have only ever dealt with 700 and 900 engines, never the 200/amazon.

The seller cant give me specifics unfortunately. I believe its a B20.

I remember searching for cams a long time ago, before I transistioned to diesel, d24tic's etc, having owned a higher performance b230fk with a K cam IIRC. I sold the cam because it was way too revvy.

Anyway - Penta I know has a different cam, not sure on head though. I just thought I would run it past a few of the redblockers before I continue to bid. If it was a case of "new" head, and as long as the cam hasn't stuffed its bearings/tappets, I can probably save it.

Or just chuck an FK at it. I've seen a few marinised escort diesel engines, helped remarinise them with the correct kit...
I think a visit may be in order.
If I win, those decals broadcasting its a penta are coming off, And Draco? hmm... really?

it looks like a B21 from 1975 onwards ...

A friend had a launch with 2 x B30 3 litre 6 cylinder 175 bhp engines side by side unique to this version was 3 stromberg carburettors per engine , they had the B30E camshaft.

Hi
I would agree B21 the easy way to goo would be
B 230 swap the bits over and rejet the carb
hole job about 1 day
I think the carb will be solix in my view yuck but good for flat out power

This might be worth a read and suggests it's definitely not a 2.0L, more likely 2.1L (2127cc) or 2.3(2316cc) :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_...ne#Volvo_Penta

Remember also that the whole idea of it is the simplicity - no complicated ECUs etc, just a basic carb so retrofitting a B230FK/FT would mean fitting the ECU, EZK, loom and so on just to get the engine to run.

If you wanted more power, look for a later Penta engine running on carbs, the AQ151 is about 150bhp and still simple with no ECUs etc.

If a B230FK/FT was fitted, that is an EFi engine so would need the ECUs to run! It wouldn't be easy and probably not possible to just fit the Penta bits onto it to make it run, for a start the distributors are in different places between a B21/23 and a B230..........
