Sat Nav in France
Just reading about the E1500 fine for having a sat nav with speed camera detection /placement position. My 2016 has this for UK map, does it
A) have European maps b) have speed camera warnings for Europe c) if so, can I turn the function off? Last edited by yostumpy; May 18th, 2022 at 18:35. |

I have read that Volvo have taken actions to remove the speed camera data from the maps, in areas where such information has become illegal after the manufacturing and delivery of the car.
Thus, provided that you have updated your maps to the most recent, you should be OK. But the updates are your responsibility to load. |

I use a speed camera position subscription service from pocketgpsworld. It is far superior to anything supplied by any sat nav company as it is updated every month on information supplied by the thousands of subscribers who are most enthusiastic about having the latest data. It loads as Point of Interest data and isn't dependant upon the map version. I turned off the Volvo speed camera information completely and substituted the PGW system which I also use on an old TomTom stored in the central storage compartment with just an audio output instead of the Volvo audio output on the car's system. The subscription output announces what the camera threat is and doesn't just bleep. I turned off the POI bleeps on the Volvo system. The two have to be updated together but work remarkably well. The subscription service allows you to decide whether to include French or Swiss cameras and allows you to remove them. And if you report a new unlisted camera that is subsequently verified, you get a free lifetime subscription. It only costs £20 a year for 12 monthly updates anyway. https://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modul...eferer=SideBar

My 2012 doesn't have speed camera warnings via the map data. But that year had a pretty good interface for loading your own POI files. They can be anything: Dog kennels, ice cream shops or speed cameras.
Our 2016 had cameras built into the map. Separate POI support is inferior. |

The problem with cameras built into the maps is that they only update when the map updates. POI data can be regularly updated to cover new cameras when they appear. The maps only get updated every other year! That's why I use the subscription POI service.

Yes, I understand that. But support for separate POI files is inferior in the last models, compared to the 2012 edition.

My 2014 XC70 has no add POI capability. After much investigation with Volvo, which finally told me how to upload my own data, they are not POIs they are 'stored locations' and only a few are uploaded - about a dozen or so. Utterly pointless. It's because older models had Sensus RTI. The later models had Sensus Navigation, which appears to have software sourced from a totally different provider. It was not broke, but they sure 'fixed' it. They even 'broke' the GPX file format that must be used, and the only way to sort it out is now to use a Garmin GPX file converter on the previously perfectly accepted files. It took much lengthy correspondence with Volvo via the dealer, to get to the bottom of this, and Volvo still don't really seem to realised what they did. They seemed to think the facility to add a few 'stored locations' via file transfer is as good as being able to add one's own POIs.

Quote from a person who works with navigation equipment for Volvo (I'll not reveal his name here):
"It seems as soon as we (technicians) have sorted out all the issues with a navigation system, then they (management) select a new supplier." |

Also, they completely fail to tell the dealers about any of it. Nobody at my dealer - even the backroom technical lead - had any idea there was a difference between Sensus RTI and Sensus Navigation. It took me ages to prove to them there was a problem, identify there was a difference and get them to find out what it was and how the new system (stored locations, not POIs) was supposed to work and what file format would work.
