Just a word of warning on this one, I bought my '06 xc70(D5 engine) with this problem.
I decided to replace the swirl throttle shaft as it felt loose and was rattling.
The arm must have been broken for a while.
When I took the cam cover off I discovered the shaft had snapped between cylinders 2 and 3 and the shaft between 3 and 4 looked fatigued(the metal had gone grey).
It might be an idea to tie the shaft arm in place if anyone decides to run without the link arm.
I had intended to replace the broken ball with a small rose joint but on seeing the shaft I had to order a replacement.
