Alloy Rim Rust
On my drivers side front tyre I'm having to check the the pressure daily and have to top it up every 2-3 days. I thought it would be the air valve that would need replacing as I've had similar with a previous car, but it looks like it is rust on the rim. I'm due for some new tyres soon, but don't want to bother until I get this issue sorted. Can this rust be sandpapered off, does it need to be repaired, or will I need a new set of alloys?

Most good tyre fitters will sand off the corrosion and then put a sealing compound round the rim when fitting the new tyres to make a good bead seal.
It only takes them a couple of minutes per wheel.

Another sealing problem with alloys can occur when the paint lifts off the wheel rim but doesn't necessarily flake away. Air escapes between the rim and the paint. A good tyre fitter will also spot this and deal with it in a similar way to above.

Thanks, put my mind at rest there. I'll phone the chaps that repaired my last puncture and hopefully they will be able to sand and seal it.

You can get the tyre place to remove the tyre and take home and work on it.
I used a mains drill and on e of these, cuts thru the paint and oxide layer like butter but does not marr the alloy - geaynious! The wheel is designed to stip paint from wood - without scratching the wood. This is snap of mine note no gouges you get with wire cup brush. These were a bit of a find and I did mine - which from a 40psi fill were 20psi in 3~4 days. The wheel did all 8 beads on mine and a neibour used it to full renovate 4 wheels on a CRV for under a fiver. http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p10332?table=no I used brush on hammerite special metals primer - when hard I used silver wheel spray from http://www.autosessive.com/products/...c4&fo_s=gplauk when paint hard, got tyres fitted, I emptied the tyres when I got home and put dive air in and they didnt need topping up for a whole year! |
