After all that I've now decided not to have the gasket and/or head done, in view of three factors, firstly have now found out I don't have to pay out for a cam belt fitting so I may as well run the car for as long as I can and get what mileage I can out of her for the money paid, also a new job I was starting didn't eventually pan out and also have realised the lack of compression is due to other worn parts in engine so really not worth spending out on gasket and possibly head. About to pm Jor to say I will not be needing the cylinder head so kindly offered for sale. Many thanks to all for all your help & advice re my engine, took me a long time to get to the bottom of her problems and make the right decision! She might soldier on for a long time yet, keeping her serviced and in good oil and coolant topped up, I think if I drove her very gently she'd go on for ever but whats the point of a car if not for enjoying the drive?
