D5 difficult starting
My 2003 D5 is running OK except for one fault. If the car is used every day it starts first time every time, however if I dont use it for say 3 days it takes 2 goes to start, and after coming back from a weeks holiday with the car not being used it took 5 goes to start and I thought it wouldnt. I can only think of air in system somewhere. When I turn the key to start it turns over OK but then tries to start but stops. Any body had this fault. When it does this weird non starting I can hear air being forced out of somewhere, as though the car is back firing. Wondered if injector seals were faulty althogh no signs of fuel leakage.

Have you ever replaced fuel filter? I would start from that. You've mentioned air forced out from somewhere, could you be more specific? Which side of the car, front, rear, left right?

D5 Bad starting
Hi. Yes have changed fuel filter in May this year with OE part. Noise seems from middle of engine. The engine tries to fire but then stops turning. And I have to turn key to try again. Cannot keep engine turning with ign key as the engine tries to fire then stops. If car used daily then fault doesnt appear only after standing for a few days.

difficult starting
I think if injectors were leaking there would be a lot of start up smoke, which there isnt, I think the problem is air in system/lack of fuel i.e. fuel somehow draining back.

Check the injector leak off pipes, look for small traces of fuel or hissing when shutting down the engine. They are small o rings coming off the 5 nylon/rubber pipes directly ontop of the injector.

First checks.
I've come across this a number of times and would recommend the following:
1. Establish whether the problem is air in the fuel lines (a common issue) by fitting a short length of clear pipe (temporarily) to the fuel pump. If there are numerous bubbles then you need to work back from there (fuel filter head, in-tank fuel pump, fuel lines). 2. If all appears ok up to the diesel pump (after trying the above) I would recommend a visit to a specialist or main dealer. It is easy to establish an injector fault with VIDA, Volvos computer system, but would next to impossible without short of sending the injectors away. Another possible is the diesel pump itself - this is a problem particularly when a car has been 'run dry' which damages the pump. Hope this helps. Petevolvo |
