V50 Immobiliser fault? Turn steering try start again
Hi,
PLEASE HELP VOLVO EXPERTS: I am new to the forum and need your guys help please ! I have owned 3 volvos and this is the first time I've came across this issue. RESEARCH: I've searched google through and through to hear about this common fault on other volvos like the V50, s40, xc60 c30 etc. However there is no definitive answer as of yet. THE FAULT: Unlock the car as normal, try to start the car and the key fob doesn't make the "Zurrrppp" noise when placed into the key immobiliser hole. As soon as I dip the clutch and turn to position one or two, it states on the screen: "TURN STEERING TRY START AGAIN". Nothing happeneds, then when I remove the key out of the hole there is no "ZURRRRP"sound either. This is an intermittent fault that prevents the car from starting for hours/days. It will randomly sort it self out and not happen again for a month or so. This time I'm stuck and have to call the AA for recovery WHAT IVE ALREADY DONE: -New car battery -Soft resets -diagnostic with snap on & Delphi shows nothing -charge the battery -whack the steering lock -turn the wheel left & right full lock 5 times. (Possible steering lock issue) POTENTIAL ISSUES: -key fob ? -steering angle lock sensor ?(I've bought one off eBay but needs to be reprogrammed) -immobiliser key hole on dash ? ANY HELP IS APPROCIATED, Experience of this issue or thoughts/ ideas? Many thanks, DDDOOOMMM |

Well if the fob was faulty then the car wouldn't unlock/boot up when you put the key in. That message coming up suggests to me that the steering lock is faulty

Can you explain further what you mean by the "Zurrrppp" noise??? Are you referring to the sound of the steering lock releasing? If so chances are it's your ignition switch / barrel / lock / thingy in the dash.

Hi, thanks for a response.
The key fob is unlocking the doors and boot so you'd think that would be out of the question. However I've had a faulty Mercedes key fob that unlocked the doors but failed to communicate with the immobiliser. I just used the spare instead to solve that issue. It's a shame I haven't got a spare Volvo fob as I would have tried this! Ok yes I agree I am 90% it's the SCL (steering column lock) that is shear bolted into the steering column. Does anyone know someone who could fix / reprogramme a used steering column lock with Volvo immobiliser software? Near south west England, London or south west that isn't steelership prices. Many thanks |

Hi,
The "zerp"noise is the sound of the key fob engaging and communicating with the immobiliser. It's on all modern volvos when you put the key inside or remove it from the barrel on any position Yeah I'm sure this sound is from the ignition switch barrel. Might be a chance its the steering lock itself. How do I go about changing the ignition barrel & or steering column lock with used parts. The steelership said they can't reprogramme used like for like parts :/ Thanks for your repsonses. DDDOOOMMM |

Have you tried firmly whacking the end of the key whilst in ignition ?

If knocking the key doesn't work give it a go tuning the wheel so it hits your steering lock each way. Also when you park the car are you parking with the wheel strait?

I think Paddy Red meant banging the steering left and right while the steering lock is engaged to 'remind' the steering lock unit who is boss...
Worked for me.

Deffo a common fault. I believe the ignition switch has been redesigned a few times to cure it. Likely you will just need to bite the bullet and replace that. Mind you I'm sure that one comes with an immobiliser message on the dim not steering so ignore me.
