Is it right-hand drive? There were LHD 144s with PAS, but not RHD.

Most RHD 164s had PAS. You might be able to make it work, but the geometry and dimensions are not the same as a 144 (due to the 164's longer wheelbase).

Another alternative is electric PAS on the column, a lot of classic rally people are using this, retrofitting stuff from modern small cars.

Default PAS volvo 144 LHD/RHD

Hi there,
I managed to fit the PAS from a LHD 164 into my previous 144. Only one bolt fit becouse the whole pattern is different compared to the 144 steeringbox. I made an adapterplate and di a lot of grinding to make the surface a bit hollow since this follows the shap of the 164 box. Tapped and drilled 3 holes to make it fit the old hole-pattern in the chassis.

Than the 164 box was positioned in a way that the outgoing shaft operating the steeringsystem was on the same position as the old 144 box. (more or less). Marked the position of the other 3 holes and again started drilling/tapping.

Adapterplate ready. When trying to pull the shaft operating the steeringsystem O destroyed the aly top-cover plate on the box where you have the nut with adjusting threaded end. (Adjustable by means of a flat screwdriver. So be careful whilst taking away the old 164 operating arm from the splined shaft. Don't start knocking with a hammer since it lead to making a helicoil (whilst having it all fitted) in a coverplate with small needle bearings which will all come loose. I can assure you that getting these out of the steering box with a magnet (all of them) can take some time!!!!!!

The arm from the 144 needs to be fuitted to the 164 steeringbox. And off you go..

I'm seriously considering the electrical PAS from a modern car to be fitted to the amazon project which will start in a short while. Any information on this subject is welcom. I heard somebody collecting the PAS from Corsa's!! Is that true? Any instructions available?

Best regards, Joseph

Joseph,

I've seen DIY electrical power steering info on sites that do historic motorsport, especially rallying. Unfortunately I don't have the links, but a google search should get you going.

You know there's a ready made kit available? But it is not cheap.

Tell us more about the Amazon project!
