S40 2.0D poly-vee belt failure?
Today my 900 mile old S40 2.0D had the most horrible chattering sound after I started it. There was a smell of rubber burning. I immediately switched off and looked around the engine. I saw nothing unusual and the poly-vee belt was in place. There were a few tiny specks of rubber lying on the alternator.
I was towed to the supplying dealer who are suspecting a "failed belt" and saying that the chattering was probably a rattling belt tensioner. Needless to say the Volvo garage will not have a belt until tomorrow. Has anyone heard of such a problem and explanation? To me a brand new belt should not fail especially as an auto tensioner is used. Beemer |

RE: S40 2.0D poly-vee belt failure?
I suspect its worse than a failed belt?
if there were specs of rubber lying around then suspect one of the pulleys has seized or is starting to. thus belt slipping causing the chatter and waring. my friends v40T experienced similar symptoms, but he ran the car to get of the motorway, and the belt snapped, when he looked under the bonnet not only was there bits of rubber but a fair amound of swarf aswell, turned out the barings on his alternator had seized - solid. cost him about £180 i think for a new alternator(non volvo) think volvo wanted 350+ for it plus labour of course I MAY BE WRONG THO' hehe good luck ;-) |

ps, my T4 started making "clacking" noises in this area recently, so i'm keeping a very close eye on it (86,000 miles) I note yours has only done 900 miles, weird?? shurely cant be seized baring then?

polyvee belt replaced and problem gone! Anyone know if the belt tensioner is spring loaded or hydraulic?

Not long had my tensioner replaced on my 2.0T Cost around £50 from a dealer, not unreasonable I thought, and mine is spring loaded.
