I invested in a solar trickle charger as well (but that was when I had a slightly 'iffy' battery that was, eventually when I had some cash, replaced).
True, they won't work through the cigarette lighter; but mine also had a lead with croc clips on and it was easy to route through the door edge and bonnet edge. BUT!!!!!, although there was a lead with croc clips on, it wasn't fused! So, very first job was to put an in-line fuse on the live line!

In most Volvos the boot socket is live so you could plug it into that.

Except that Volvo went through a phase of removing the boot auxiliary power socket between about 2012-2016 or so. I had one in my 2009 V50. Sadly absent in my 2015 XC60. Pay around £100 and the dealer will fit it for you. Penny-pinching.
