Manual or Auto - which do you prefer? - Page 5

Morning everybody,

The gearbox question is quite hard (for me anyway) i do a lot of driving and find when your having a bit of fun manuals sound/feel/react the best but when your stuck in traffic on the M6 or the likes a auto is perfect or even when you are just cruising.

My car is manual & our family car is auto

My vote is with manual

I don't understand all these auto box enthusiasts who say its brilliant in the cruise on a motorway. I drive my manual on the motorway at 85mph area in 5th gear with cruise control on, no difference to auto.
I agree with most, the only time I like to drive an auto is in heavy traffic as the benefits far out way the wear and tear on the clutch and a tired left leg.

For me I would only have an Auto in a big barge such as a big merc or jag, I like an auto round town but a manual isnt a major chore unless its a really old heavy car such as rover p6 v8s where double declutch downchanges can be a nightmare!
In a high performance car such as a T5 for me manual is my personal choice, I wouldnt mind an auto as a second vehicle!
There nothing like a spirited drive cross country drive in a car with a nice slick manual box!
In my opinion geartronic is the worst gear box in any of the recent volvos from the last 15 years particularly in the earliest S80 T6s, the asian warner box is far far better!
I voted manual!

Doing a lot of driving in the city or around the M25 when there is a lot of traffic and jams caused by 20 mile stretches of roadworks (M1) is when I pine for an auto. The rest of the time I like the manual. I also want an auto during school run/rush hour.

Auto/Manual, In the early 70s i used to drive Tuned Minis, Ford Cortinas
Mk 1/2/&3 3l capris, all manuals, & loved it, Then i switched to American
muscle cars, Mustangs, cameros, trans-ams, with V8, power, all Automatics,
Loved them, Mind you petrol was only 79p a gallon, & we were moaning at
that, (oh those were the days) Now my boy racer days are over, with the help of riding motorcycles from 1971-2002, & old age/laziness, its Autos for me now, mind you the Devil still gets into me now & then, & upset kids in thier
toys with big exhausts/wings & stickers,
T5 auto, sports mode, love it.....

The first 21 years of driving i said i would never have an automatic, i like to be in control of what the car does, i then got an auto, oooh, such simple lazy driving in town & when in traffic jams

auto for every day boring stuff but has to be a manual for having fun in

joking aside, the poll seems to show "us" auto drivers are leading, probably cos manuals are for kids and girls... he he ha ha ho ho

When I first got an auto after having manuals for years everyone said I would never go back to a manual. How wrong were they, I couldn't wait to get another manual. I wouldn't have an auto again.
