Default Advice please??

Recently purchased my third Volvo, an 03 XC90 SE Auto.

All positive so far, aside from the dreaded and terminal "deck error" message on the CD display which I fear means it's knackered! and the fact that whoever had the car before me put 255/50/18 tyres on it, as opposed to the recommended 235/60/18. This has been deemed dangerous during a recent service so I may have an expensive decision to make.

I have spent hours pouring over the really interesting topics on this site and now hope that someone can advise me on the following. The car has come with the wood effect dash, which I cannot cope with and intend to either replace via a breakers, or remove and get sprayed up in a more agreeable colour. As part of this I also want to replace or spray up the silver insert in the top of the auto gear stick as it is very badly scratched. I have got all the other bits out on a 'dry run', but have been cautious with bullying the insert out of the gear leaver in case it's not meant to be removed or I damage something in the process.

Can anyone advise on how the insert can be removed. Can it be levered out?

Thanks in advance.

I think various companies make alternative gear lever and dash parts.

You need to email them unless you can read Swedish though. They do a huge range of materials.

P.S. Choose "All cars" "Volvo" "XC90"

as regards the "cd deck error" this can be fixed.the actual cd deck can be replaced within the main cd player with no dealer down loads needed.i speak from experience.the hard thing is finding a donor player for sale.

Thanks Peter, I was considering going down the i-pod route. Where did you get the deck from? Did you have to buy the whole unit and split the deck off?

yes i was fortunate enought to find a complete radio/cd unit on ebay.i knew the cd deck could be changed as i had to dismantle my original unit to retrieve the cd discs trapped inside.all the electronics are in the mainframe of the unit whereas the cd deck is contained within this unit and connected via a flexible ribbon style connector.so i reckoned there was a good chance the deck could be replaced without any dealer downloads.it has worked perfect ever since.my xc90 is an 04 model and the cd decks in th early models can develop this "deck error" fault.basically the mechanism goes bizarre and the stacking mechanism falls to pieces.this can be caused by as simple a thing as disconnecting the battery.when the battery is reconnected the cd player tries to eject all the discs at once and knackers itself.not a very good design.later models have a different design of player.

changeing the cd deck is not as difficult as you might think.the hard part is finding a donor unit for sale.its very possible that the same unit is used in other models of volvo.i can find the seriel numbers for the player if you want them.
