I think (and I'm winging all of this) that since the two outlet ports are commoned, you need to prevent air being drawn from the outlet which isn't being fed.
Edit: Yeah, probably not. It was bugging me too, so I went looking. I think the implementation here is just a variation on that described in this patent: https://patents.google.com/patent/US5984644A/en It also refers to a "vertical, membrane like disc". Take a look a images 2 and 3.

Interesting as my 2019 car also has an issue with the rear washer not working. Dealer thought it was the non-return valve on the hatch but apparently it needs a new motor.
You would have think they have issues like this ironed out after a few years. Obviously not.

I get it now. If the valve wasn't there it could draw water from the other outlet. This would then mean it takes longer for the water to reach it's destination when using the other outlet next time.
