Default 2007 D5244T4 Oil leak - Crankcase breather/PCV?

I noticed a small oil leak around where the gearbox meets the sump while doing an oil change. Not to the point that it was dripping, and I hadn't lost any noticeable amount of oil over about 5k miles, but the parts surrounding had a bit of a mist of oil on them...

So I did some reading about what it could be, I believe the only places it could really be coming from in that area are the rear main seal or the core plug that sits above it (I think?).

Because it isn't a massive leak I got to reading about the potential for crankcase pressure to cause oil to leak from various places, the rear main seal being one of them.

Pulling the dipstick or oil filler cap with the engine running does visibly produce smoke, so I'm guessing whatever is in place to allow the crankcase to breathe is clogged.

Anybody got any pointers on servicing the crankcase ventilation system? I see a hose coming off the top of the cam cover and into a box attached to the oil filter, which on close inspection is very dirty on mine (pics). I'm guessing that's it? Struggling to find any reliable information on exactly what it is or how to service it.
