Any noise that is proportional to road speed and changes when cornering is likely a wheel bearing. I would sort that first and then check if the brake issues remain. If you have noise, a wheel up test should be able to identify the offending corner. Use only genuine Volvo bearings or SKF etc. Avoid the cheap parts on eBay or you will likely be doing it twice. If you are on a budget - I would rather use a second hand genuine Volvo part than a new cheap pattern part.
If your car has had only occasional use in lockdown, the brake judder is likely corrosion on the discs, if theyre not too worn a skim will sort that.

That era of XC90 had very poor wheel bearings and that is likely your issue if they've never been changed. Amazing they've lasted this long if they haven't. I had both mine done under used car Volvo warranty as apparently its quite a pig off a job.
Then, as mentioned, check the brakes as you'll be pulling them apart anyway to do the bearing.

thanks, looking at my invoices MY2003 had a new wheel bearing N/S/E fitted by my local indy garage in July 2018 at 156k. Now on 181k
Parts £204 Labour £132 Diagnostic Scan £35 Total inc VAt was £445 Not sure what part was fitted, but assumed the always fitted genuine Volvo or OE. Looks like it could be another expensive visit. Definitely want to get it sorted as besides from this the car is running perfect and have no intentions of replacing it. Even though it probably starting to not make economical sense. I blame jet washing the wheels over winter

Got it back today
Rear Wheel Bearing, 2 x Lower suspension arms, 1 lower ball joint Parts £303.44 Labour £356.40 Scan £35 Total inc VAT 833.52 drives a lot better and sorted the noise, not sure what make parts were fitted just that they were quality from Eurocar parts hey ho, had to get it done as not a job I could undertake, certainly for the wheel bearings. might have had a go at the others but happy to pay someone to do it. Just wish I knew or had confidence that the parts were quality. I guess there is no easy way to tell once fitted.

Not sure what you mean by N/S/E for the previous bearing (July 2018) and whether this was the same bearing again or a different one??
As regards manufacturer of the parts fitted - what did you Indy tell you? Mine would show me the parts he took off and also the packaging for the new bits (if I asked) I'm glad it's fixed now. Cheers Dave |
