Timing Belt
When I last changed the timing belt on a V40 Volvo engine it was possible, but not easy, to remove and install the timing belt without removing the aux belt pulley. There was just enough room to fiddle the belt on and off and this saved removing the pulley.
Has anyone tried to do this on a 5 cylinder ? The belt on my V70 has only done 70000 miles but it's now 10 years old so needs changing. John

It is the same engine, just one more or less cylinder depending on which way you are looking at it. So yes, if it is possible on one it will be on the other. Although I have always found it easier to remove the pulley.

Yes I agree they are all part of the 4-5-6 cylinder engine family but the rib and bosses all differ because they are all different castings.
I only asked if anyone has changed the timing belt on a 5 cyl petrol without removing the aux drive pulley. John

5 cylinder petrol the timing belt wil slide though one of the gaps behind the pulley, so no need to remove it.
D5 has a wider belt which apparently doesn't fit through the gap, so pulley needs removing on those. The 'last of the line' 2.5 T5's found in the P1 S40/V50 etc you DO need to remove the pulley because there is no room due to ford focus chassis. |

Finally changed the Timing and Aux belts without removing the Aux belt pulley and it was easy as falling off a log! I had the tools to remove the pulley but worked on the principle that if the old belt comes off the new one will go on and it did.
Saved the hassle of removing and replacing the crank nut and the cost of replacing the 4 stretch bolts. John
