286mm brakes ! no bite
Hi,
Had a search through history etc and still not clear what route to take. I changed disks and pads (eicher pads brembo disk) a year ago. Still no bite and can't put up with it any longer, i only notice when i drive other cars what they should be like. So is this setup complete rubbish? Which would be the way forward? New disks and pads of a better quality? (recommendations please) currently 286 on a P2 D5. It's a heavy lump. Or larger disks?, adding caliper carriers ? I have no idea how the quality in disks makes a difference, i can understand the pads but steel is steel right ? or is there a carbon ratio that makes them better? Thanks in advance |

I have Brembo discs and pads all round, if you stamp on the stop pedal it feels like your eyeballs are gonna pop out. The mot guy even said brakes are well beyond required levels he was surprised how good they are
What have you checked already, like have you replaced the fluid and bled the air out, when you changed pads did you pull out the sliding pins and give them a good wire brush and grease up etc is it possible the pads got contaminated with grease or something. seeing as they're relatively cheap I guess that would be the thing I'd change first if everything else looked ok Last edited by stuart bowes; Jun 25th, 2021 at 21:48. |

Even the caliper spring being fitted incorrectly can affect the braking feel.
Having had both 286 and 316 brakes for several years on the same car, the 286 brakes are definitely not bad so my guess is that something in your braking setup isn't right.

Did you clean the preservative off the new disks thoroughly with brake cleaner or similar before fitting them???
I have known people just give them a wipe with a clean rag and fit them with new pads which just get contaminated straight away. |

Hi, thanks for the replies...
Changes the brake fluid System bled Greased the pins etc and cleaned them up. Cleaned them up too. I found a receipt and def brembo on the rears but have a receipt from eurocarparts for the fronts. By the price don't think the disks are premium. Would this make a difference? If i go down the replacement route, should i try and source carriers and go to 305? (using came caliper etc, easy upgrade.) |

Stick some xc90 336 calipers on it.... That'll sort it out...

That looks awesome but what size wheels do you have, that might be something to bear in mind
My 286mm discs have the calipers literally fag papers away from the inside edge of my 15" rims so I would need bigger wheels to even go up to the 316s I think from how good mine are I really don't see an upgrade being necessary, I'd try the cheapest option first i.e check the calipers for any signs of corrosion and are they working correctly, if so stick a new set of decent pads on it, what's that 50 quid and an hour of your time? Or get garage to look first and see what they say Last edited by stuart bowes; Jun 26th, 2021 at 14:18. |

I have 17" on and there is tons of room
5 spoke from C70 I do all my own work (engineer by trade) and guarantee the caliper is working well. Don't have any experience in different types of pads and disks. Assuming there's nothing wrong with the setup then it can only be the parts I suppose
I don't have any experience of eicher but I have used their pagid pads before and they worked? Although the ones I bought for my impreza literally didn't fit and I had to order something in from Japan but that's another story.. All I can really say for sure is I have Brembo pads on mine and they work perfectly well.. I know pads come in different compounds so can vary but like you said discs are just lumps of metal. I guess the way they can vary is in warping easily or not venting and giving you brake fade? But I'm assuming you mean they don't work right from the off. It's not a problem of them getting worse over the course of each drive At least with the 17s you have options though eh |

I think easy route stick some good pads on.
Other route is upgrade. Are 336 an overkill? Next easiest option would be to find some 305mm caliper carriers. Which I have tried...and failed. Tons of XC90 calipers for the 336 option. |
