Red face Removing Tailgate Trim

Had a rather embarrassing incident earlier today involving my V50, my mountain bike, a Thule roof-mounted bike carrier and a height restriction barrier. You get the idea. In my defence, it was the first time i'd taken my bike out in 4 years and the first time ever using a roof carrier. And also, the park i went to normally has the height restriction gate open.

Anyways, the outcome was a mullered bike carrier, shattered rear bike light and a broken front mudguard. All replaced a couple of hours later for the not-so-bad price of £125.

However, i'm now left with a decent dent at the top of the tailgate. It's not scratched and looks like it might just pop out if i can get to it. I had a quick bash at pulling away the interior trim from behind the 3rd brake light (top of the window) and i managed to get a finger into a gap and was able to push against the dent, but not with enough force. Sounded like something would break if i pulled much harder, so i put it back in place and left it for now. How do i get this trim off properly so that i can gain access to where the dent is? Would i need to remove the carpeted bit too? And any hints for pushing the dent out would help. I was thinking handle of a screwdriver or something???

I can't help you on how to remove the trim, but please don't use a screwdriver!

You will end up causing more damage, either by scratching the paintwork and allowing corrosion to set in, or by actually causing a sharp dent outwards, if you see what I mean.

I would give one of the local dent people a ring, they could probably pop it out in half an hour, and will probably only cost £50 or so. Maybe less.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the screwdriver handle not the sharp end. I've got plenty of nice, soft, rubber handled screwdrivers.

Thanks for the links Jason. I'll have a crack on my next day off.

warm up the dented area first as well but my personal view would be to use someone like dentmagic to remove the dent.
Remember the metal is most likely stretched!
