I had a V70 tdi, bought with 104,000 miles on the clock , when I changed the oil I noticed it sparkled as it emptied into the catch tank, I poured what came out into a clear 5 litre jack and left it by the shed until I was able to take it to the recycling dump. 3 days later I went to move the jack and noticed a silver layer at the bottom of the jack.
The silver layer was 10m or so deep and was slivers of steel that had worn off the gears.

That car is now on 240,000 miles and the box has never been out and never given any problem, but it's the reason I change the gearbox oil every 2 years on my current xc70.

I carry out the same regime on the land rover but check the oils more regularly. It gets used off road and often waded through rivers and water troughs and there is the danger of emulsification of the oils, if any water has got passed a seal oil is changed and breathers checked immediately, it will be changed again at the 2 year interval.

In comparison to engines, gearboxes and axils oil is very cheap and any machine runs sweeter on clean oil.

Paul.

Thanks for your replies. I’ll do the fluid change by option two & I’ll order the fluid from Smith & Allen. They sell the same spec oil as Volvo, but its cheaper.

Thanks for the link. So the Mannol fluid is cheaper than Smith & Allen & is suitable for the transmission.

I've read that Mannol is mineral based fluid, but Smith & Allen is synthetic. You've had no trouble using this fluid then?

I suppose both brands meet JWS3309 specs, so it doesn't make a difference which you use?

People have been using Mannol on here for donkeys. Never an issue reported that I can recall.

Selecting the wrong ATF can have significant bad effects on your transmission. There does seem to be some confusion about what goes into the TF80SC gearbox but the most detailed explanations seem to be here (although it is an American site for Volvo owners):

https://forums.swedespeed.com/showth...AW-1-(JWS-3324)

AW-1 is not JWS3309, it's JWS 3324 Meeting JWS3309 doesn't seem to be the need for the TF80SC box.

I'm no expert whatsoever but was interested in the ATF puzzle as I'd had a similar conundrum on a ZF 4HP20 auto box in the past and found that it pays to find out exactly which specification is required before putting the wrong stuff in the box.

So the Mannol fluid linked above isn’t the right one? My owners manual says JWS3309.

That one is 3309 unless I'm not understanding something?
